Music Notes

Music Musings. . .

Last Sunday, I received a gift from Matt Watson.  It was Volume 7 from The Works of John Wesley, a bicentennial edition.  Volume 7 is a “Collection of Hymns for Use of the People Called Methodists”.  I have only begun to peruse it, but it is clear Wesley was serious about the hymnody to be used in and by the church.  It is to reflect the truths of the scripture and present theology to the people.  I look forward to sharing some of this volume with you.

However, in sharp contrast, I recently found a list of “hymns” for the LukeWarm Church.  The titles will sound familiar, but let’s pray the sentiment is not ours.

“A Comfy Mattress Is Our God” “Oh, How I Like Jesus “

“Joyful, Joyful, We Kinda Like Thee”       “I Surrender Some”

“Above Average is Thy Faithfulness”

“Sit Up, Sit Up for Jesus”

“All Hail the Influence of Jesus' Name”

“Take My Life and Let Me Be”
My Hope is Built on Nothing Much”         “Be Thou My Hobby”
“Blest Be the Tie That Doesn't Cramp My Style”

“When Peace, Like a Trickle”
“Oh, for a Couple of Tongues to Sing” “Pillow of Ages, Fluffed for Me”
“I Lay My Inappropriate Behaviors on Jesus”

“There Shall be Sprinkles of                         Blessings”
“I'm Fairly Certain That My Redeemer Lives”
Self-Esteem to the World! The Lord is Come”
Spirit of the Living God, Fall Somewhere Near Me”
What an Acquaintance We Have in             Jesus”
“Where He Leads Me, I Will Consider Following”
