About Taizé Prayer Service |
|
|
Taizé is a rather new concept of worship for New Haven. It first began here
in December of 2003. Its specific purpose at New Haven is to bring another
type of worship to New Haven, another perspective on worship.
The worship at New Haven is short, lasting about twenty minutes every Tuesday. During these twenty minutes, there are two songs, a responsive reading, and a scripture read in lectio divina. The story of Taizé finds its beginning in Brother Roger, who left his homeland of Switzerland for France in 1940. While Brother Roger was still sick with tuberculosis he realized his calling from God, which was to start a community where simplicity and kind hearts prevailed as a beacon of hope. While he was in France, the madness broke out: World War II. Brother Roger offered hospitality to weary refugees, regardless of creed or nation, from the small village of Taizé. Later, the village of Taizé would house orphaned children from the war. Even German prisoners-of-war were welcomed to the home of Brother Roger. On Easter Day 1949, the first brothers committed themselves to a life of service to the Risen Lord. For more information, please click here (you will leave New Haven's website). |
